Pez Collections: Watch our Sugariver Auctions for the sale

Pez: A new look for the collector

We had a collector of pez' call us and ask if we could sell them for her.  So when she dropped off 2000 of them, we decided that we had to do research on them so we could bring the collection some kind of return.  So we looked on Google, Ebay and other websites.  Having known very little we then had a quick education.  Sellers depend on us to try our darndest to cash out their life long quest into some kind of money.  The older pez with "no feet" are the most valuable items.  Also pez manufactured in other countries can bring some kind of valuable return. We had pez from Slovakia, Austria, Germany, Mexico, Hungary and the US.  We will be selling more on April 1 on http://www.proxibid.com/.  Watch for more information.

Antique Doll Collection

Dolls are a popular item to collect. However, the joy experiended on to the owner is not always appreciated to progeny of the owner or to buyers of this kind of collection. Newer dolls sold by Ashton Drake, Lenox, Bradford Exchange and other vendors are beautiful, cute or a series drop in value from the original prices paid usually after time. If luck would have it, sometimes someone is willing to pay more that $25 to $50 for one of those adorable figures. Of course, there are exceptions to that rule. I have seen John Wayne, the Wizard of Oz dolls, Shirley Temple (newer) and few others break this rule.

The story changes with dolls of a certain age and manufactor. Sometimes folk dolls, story book dolls and others are very collectible. Check out http://etsy.me/6pS1gX for some of the exceptions.

Tea Leaf Ironstone China

"5108"

Tea Leaf Ironstone China is a wonderful antique collectible. The design was based on the superstition that an unfolded tea leaf on the bottom of the tea cup meant good luck. Many English china manufacturers in the mid 1800's rushed to design a pattern of ironstone with this symbol. Both Alfred Meakin and W. H. Grindley had patterns from 1850 to 1870. The "tea leaf" was in the center of the piece embossed in a copper or gold transfer. The pieces were tough and lasted through out the years. Many originals are around today, but 150 years have played a tole on some of the surviving pieces. One must realize that people used their dishes. Most did not have them squirreled away in the cupboards. Sugariver has an online only auction of many of the surviving pieces as well as some newer renditions. The auction is Sat. April 24 to May 4, 20010 at 9:45 PM. http://http//www.scribd.com/full/30587361?access_key=key-afmb1rteykpw1e6kx4w

Miniature Liquor Bottles

Newest collection that has crossed our path at the auction house is a collection of 400 miniature liquor bottles.  The bottles were collected over a period of about 45 years.  Some of the bottles were evaporating a bit, but all were sealed and unopened.  What a statement of control!  The gentleman who collected them was about 93 when we received them to sell. Needless to say, some were very old.  Would I drink any of those bottles? Hummm

The importance  is in the collectible value of those little bottles.  On Ebay, some of the old whiskies sell for over $100.  Other bottles are not worth more than a dollar or two. The challenge for the buyer is to figure the difference before buying.  Research is the key.  Check out the online auction at www.proxibid.com/sugariver  It was the auction held on Jan 22.

Urinals

Isn't that the oddest thing to collect? We have a dear client who collects hospital urninals. She has porcelain, glass( her favorite), and stainless steele. They are all shapes and sizes. She has quite a few. I would imagine displaying them is not easy.

She buys them when they come up for auction, but it is not the most common item. Most of my estate families dispose of them before they reach the floor. I am not sure if she has moved to bedpans yet!

A Collection of Spittoons

Another unusual collection that has been sold through our auction was that of 100 spittoons. Just thinking of all that spit is quite unnerving. It is amazing to see the different varieties of those containers. The most common are metals like brass, but they come in bronze, silver plate, tin and cast iron.

Some of the fanciers spittons are in delft porcelain, limoge decorated, carnival glass, cut glass and more. They are also in many sizes but most are the traditional shape. The most difficult part of this collection is finding buyers of so many. One of our discoveries is if you have one of an item, it is not likely to draw many different buyers of that item. Add a bunch and advertise. They will come....
